Ibague

Ibague | Tolima | Colombia |

Our goal was to create a project that would positively affect kids– conjoining sports and education to create a better educational environment. Our partner, the CORDHI foundation, has spent the past few years focusing on teaching Taekwondo to children in Ibague, building discipline and leadership. CORDHI has inspired many national champions with their program. The success of CORDHI’s programs made them an ideal partner for SEF because of their focus on creating safe and structured environments for kids. SEF applied and won a $10,000 grant from Davis Projects for Peace, and raised funds with a benefit to fund a week-long programme with Ibague and grant 20 1-year scholarships to outstanding students.

Community Overview

The Ibague community is the capital of the department Tolima. The city is known as the Musical Capital of Colombia and America because of its rich history, multiple monuments to music, and folklore festivals. SEF’s work in Ibague mainly concentrated on the students from the “ollas” or the slums. SEF provided kids in the area a week-long experience that inspired and helped the students to realize their potential and mental and physical abilities.
